Since around the end of the year, the number of students has increased a lot. The demand for Japanese schools seems to be increasing.
It has been four months since I started my business.
I think it is a miracle that I was able to come this far in four months.
I am very happy every day thanks to my students.
Today, I will share the demographics of the students in my school.
・Student demographics and purpose of taking lessons
Currently, the largest number of students are, of course, those who grew up in England,
The others vary, but most of them speak Russian and Portuguese.
The youngest are high school students, the oldest are in their 70s, but the main group is in their 20s and 30s.
The students' occupations are really varied, but they all have really great careers and I learn a lot from them.
Many of them are here as a hobby, but several students come to class every day. The most common reason for taking lessons is that they have learned in the past and want to pick it up again. Other reasons are that they want to travel to Japan or have Japanese business clients/Japanese branches.
When I was teaching in Japan, many of the students wanted to enter Japanese universities or obtain work visas in Japan, so I think this is a difference in Japan. ・The Challenges of Japanese Language Education in London
First, I often hear and feel that there are far fewer quality educational institutions, and since schools are concentrated in central London and the learning population is small, there aren't enough certified teachers, it is difficult to offer group lessons and students have nowhere to go. My school also finds it difficult to find the right time to start group lessons, so I basically offer one-to-one lessons, but I do receive quite a few inquiries about group lessons. Since I have a classroom, I would really like to offer more group lessons, but it is difficult to set the schedule and the number of students. I also hear that there are far fewer opportunities to use Japanese. Output is a key to maintaining motivation, but since there are fewer opportunities to interact with Japanese people than in other Asian countries and Japan is far away, it seems difficult to find the time to use the language. Every month, one of my students takes a trip to Japan, but it is still far away. This year I'm planning to try several initiatives to solve this problem.
・My resolution in 2024
I want to create the community this year. As mentioned above, it is difficult to access Japanese-speaking communities, especially in London where there are many immigrants, so I would like to create a place where people with the same interests can connect at any time.
Last year I held several parties in my classroom, but next time I would like to rent out a pub and plan a larger party.
I live in a home(classroom) and work from home, so I don't have what I would call a community in London either. I would like to create a high-quality community where people who want to learn Japanese can gather in peace.
Of course, I would like to teach Japanese more, increase the number of students, and hopefully get a visa for my new business, but my more general goal is to improve my lessons for existing students and create a nice community.
Last year was a really tough year for me, but this year I will try my best to focus on business and have a good time with my students. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu!

年末から毎月生徒が5人ペースで増えています。
特にマーケティング活動をしているわけではないですし、客層の維持のために価格帯も高めに設定しているのですが、日本語の需要が増えているのですかね。
開業して4ヶ月、初めの2ヶ月は本当に苦しく、どうなることかと思いましたが、今月に入ってアルバイトをしなくても生活ができるほどになりました。
4ヶ月でここまで持ってこられたのは奇跡だなと思います。
生徒の皆様に恵まれて、本当に毎日楽しくお仕事をしています。
ただ、お国柄、ホリデーに行く生徒が多かったり、ストライキも多いので、固定収入をITとアルバイトで確保する必要があり、やはり接客業は先が見込めず怖いなと思いました。そして、遅くとも1年後にはこの生徒を残して日本に帰らなければならないのかと思うと、心が痛いです・・・（なんとかしたい・・・
さて、今日は、生徒の層と現状の生徒の課題、今年の目標について共有します。
・生徒の分布とレッスン目的
現状、生徒はもちろんイギリス育ちの方が最多ですが、
その他はロシア語話者とポルトガル語話者が多いです。
スペイン語が若干使えるのですが、案外ポルトガル語と違うのと、ロシア語は昨年少しやって断念してしまったので、少し後悔しています。
高校生が最年少、１番上は70代の方がいらっしゃいますが、メインは20代ー30代。
職業は本当に様々ですが、皆様本当に素晴らしいキャリアで、私が勉強させてもらうこともとても多いです。
個人レッスンのため、お稽古事としていらっしゃる方が多いですが、毎日来る生徒も何人かいます。
レッスンの目的は
過去に学んでいて再開したい、が最多。
その他は日本に旅行がしたい、日系の取引先がいる等の理由が多いです。
日本で指導していた時は、進学やビザ目的が多かったので、この辺りがイギリスらしいなと思っています。 ・イギリスでの日本語教育の課題
まず、クオリティの高い教育機関が圧倒的に少なく、ロンドン中心部に学校が集中していること、また学習者の母数が少ないので、グループレッスンの開講が難しく、生徒が行き場をなくしているような話をよく聞きます。
うちの学校でも、グループレッスンは開始タイミングを合わせるのが難しく、基本はプライベートレッスンを行なっているのですが、グループレッスンの問い合わせはかなり多いです。
せっかく教室があるので、本当はもう少しグループレッスンを行いたいのですが、スケジュールと人数の確保がなかなか難しい状況です。
また、日本語を使う機会が圧倒的に少ないという話を聞きます。
やはりモチベーションの維持はアウトプット。
ただ、日系レストランや日本人に会える場所がアジア圏に比べて少なく、日本は遠いので、なかなか使う時間を見つけられないようです。
とはいえ、うちの生徒は、毎月、誰かが日本に旅行に行っていますが、やはり遠いですよね。
これを打開しようと、緩い日本語会話カフェみたいなのを企画していたのですが、会話ができるレベルに達している生徒がほとんど集まらず、なかなか難しい状況でした。
・今年2024年の目標
機械学習BBQなんかをやったりしていたこともあるのですが、
やっぱり私はコミュニティを作りたいなと思っています。前述した通り、日本語話者のコミュニティアクセスが難しいことと、特に、移民の多いロンドンですので、同じ関心を持つ人がいつでも繋がれる場所を作りたいなと思っています。
昨年度も、教室内でのパーティを何度か開催しましたが、次回はパブを貸し切ってもう少し大きなパーティを企画したいなと思っています。
私自身、自宅兼教室に住んでおり、基本は在宅勤務のため、ロンドンでコミュニティと呼ばれるものが本当に少ないです。
日本語学習に興味のある人たちが、安心して集まることのできる、クオリティの高いコミュニティを作りたいと思っています。
もちろん、日本語の指導と、生徒をもっと増やすこと、願わくば新しい事業でビザをとれたらと思いますが、もう少し大枠の目標は既存生徒の満足度向上とコミュニティの生成です。
昨年1年間は紆余曲折あり、本当に大変な1年でしたが、今年は事業に向き合って、生徒と楽しい時間を過ごせるように頑張ります。
